Chamber Music America’s Classical Commissioning program began in 1984.  Since then, CMA has funded nearly 300 new works providing grants to U.S.-based ensembles and presenters whose programming includes Western European and/or non-Western classical and contemporary music.

CMA is pivoting in response to the National Endowment for the Arts’ recent decision to rescind grant awards to ensembles and presenters across the country. (Read more: here.)

CMA’s 2026 Classical Commissioning program is being strategically redesigned to address this urgent gap, centering support around organizations and artists most impacted by the loss of NEA funding. CMA support through this grant may be used for general operating support for these performances/programs.

For the upcoming 2026 cycle, the Classical Commissioning program will specifically support ensembles and presenters:

  • Whose funding has been rescinded by the NEA in 2025;
  • That present or perform music by living American composers whose compositions are written in any of the musical styles associated with contemporary classical music;
  • That work within a chamber music framework (2–10 musicians, one per part).

Grant awards will range based on budget size:

  • Approximately sixteen grants of $2,500 for ensembles with budgets below $249,999
  • Approximately seven grants of $5,000 for organizations with budgets up to $750,000

Classical Commissioning: A Responsive Shift is funded by Chamber Music America, with generous support from the Sewell Family Foundation. Additionalprogramsupport for theClassical Commissioningprogram is provided by the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, the Amphion Foundation, the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University, and the CMA Endowment Fund.

Chamber Music America’s Ensemble Forward program is an initiative for ensembles that perform Western European classical and/or contemporary chamber music and are based in the five boroughs of New York City. The goals of this program are to support ensembles at a crucial time in their career development and to help them navigate an increasingly demanding cultural landscape.

CMA will provide grant funds for applicants to move their ensemble forward organizationally by working with a business consultant on their business structure and/or business development. This will enable the groups to develop and continue to provide artistic programming at a high level along with effective organizational practices as they serve their audiences.

If awarded, all ensembles are required to participate in additional career training, advancement, and networking opportunities through CMA’s Learning Residentials. Learning Residentials are learning sessions tailored to the needs of each Ensemble Forward grantee group over the course of the grant period. Sessions are led by composers, ensemble leaders, presenters, as well as business professionals.

Priority is given to chamber music ensembles that clearly communicate how their project will strengthen and improve the ability of their ensemble to move forward to its next stage of development whether they are emerging, mid-career, or established.

Ensemble Forward  is made possible with generous support from the New York Community Trust.

Chamber Music America’s Artistic Projects

_____

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Artistic Projects offers grant opportunities for small chamber music ensembles and presenters with operating budgets under $250,000, to carry out their creative projects and present them to audiences in the five boroughs of New York City. The grant supports chamber music projects that may include performances, recordings, or new compositions (commissions). If the proposed project is a collaboration involving other artistic disciplines or genres, it must also be a stand-alone chamber music work.

Grants will range from $7,500 to $20,000.

CMA defines chamber music as music for small ensembles between two and ten musicians, with one musician per part, generally without a conductor. This encompasses contemporary and traditional jazz, classical, and world genres.

All activities must take place within the five boroughs of New York City between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026. Applicants and their primary collaborators (presenters, ensembles, composers) may be part of only one Artistic Projects application per grant period.
